KellyBaron Design . Summer Cottage . Lake Joe, Muskoka Lakes, Canada - November 8th, 2010

The unspoiled, scenic beauty of Muskoka Lakes, about 2 hours north of Toronto, has long been a draw for celebrities and artists who have built summer cottages where they idle away the summer while boating, watching sunsets and listening to the loons call.

Los Angeles designers/builders Kelly van Halen and Baron Rogers have recently finished renovating their own romantic cottage on Lake Joseph.

KellyBaron Design used as many green building features as possible to keep the main 4-bedroom cottage rustic but with modern updates. The traditional board and batten exterior has large energy-efficient windows that promote cross-circulation. The base of the exterior is faced in local “muskoka” stone. The rustic interiors have reclaimed hemlock wood floors and kitchen counters from old barns. The entire second floor, with gorgeous views of the trees and lake, is the master loft with bedroom, sitting room and bath.

At water’s edge are 2 boat slips and the boathouse. Built in the late 1800s, the boathouse is ideal for guests and still has its original narrow-plank hardwood floors, tongue and groove pine walls and ceiling, and antique claw foot tub in the bathroom.

Lake Joe is the smallest of the lakes but is the most popular thanks to its proximity to the amenities and marina at Port Sanfield.

BLACKMAN CRUZ - October 31st, 2010

From the twisted minds of Adam Blackman and David Cruz—who have one of the finest stores for quirky antiques and vintage pieces anywhere in the world—comes this new addition to their in-house Blackman Cruz Workshop custom line.

“David did the renderings for the Snake Chair,” say the partners. “It was sculpted in clay to be poured into bronze. We were thinking of archetypes and the snake’s sensual shapes and all that the serpent represents—good vs. evil, man’s fall from grace…”

The Snake Chair is available in a limited edition of 5.
